Sometimes you see something that makes your day because you know that it will spoil someone else’s. Seeing a Range Rover with blacked out windows being towed away for a parking infringement in Kensington is one of those sometimes…

The Kensington & Chelsea council car pound must be pretty impressive – only a few months ago I saw a Maserati being added to their collection.

The yellow registration plate on the back of the blue minibus matches Ikea’s colours perfectly on this shuttle service bus taking people between Stonebridge Park tube station and Ikea in Brent Park / Wembley … with a good choice of registration plate. I’m sure most people don’t notice it, but I appreciated it

Fresh galangal ready for preparation (from Wikipedia)
Galangal is a root that looks a bit like ginger and is used in Thai cooking. Before Oriental City (a big supermarket and food court that used to be near our house) closed, we used to buy it and Annette pounded and ground it up with lemon grass, garlic, ginger and chilli to make delicious curry paste for chicken curry. She’d normally make quite a lot – enough for 4-5 meals – and freeze it in chunks that we’d use as we needed.
Since Oriental City closed down though, we’ve not seen fresh galangal anywhere. Completely unexpectedly we saw it, frozen but still raw and ready to use, in a shop in Weymouth. We brought a couple of pieces back, but meanwhile I’ve been keeping an eye out for it in the supermarkets.
Waitrose actually have it for sale – dried – with the herbs and spices. I can’t remember how much it used to be fresh, but it wasn’t much more expensive than ginger – so maybe £5 per kilo and we’d get perhaps 200-300g at a time. Waitrose sell it for significantly more though – over £560 per kilo!

Finding good fish and chips outside Yorkshire is not easy, but we keep trying! A couple of years ago we went to Legoland near Windsor “on our way” to Dorset for a long weekend. Driving between Windsor and Dorset we pulled off a main road somewhere to find something to eat, and found a Jack’s Fish & Chips shop. It was delicious – really nice chips and lovely fresh fish.
There’s another Jack’s Fish & Chips shop in Uxbridge, not far from where we live, which we only really noticed after having eaten at the one near Windsor. We’ve been meaning to try it ever since, but only just got round to it. The Uxbridge branch was not anything like as nice, being mediocre at best.
While I was in the queue, the lady in front of me asked for a slice of lemon for her fish. Good idea I thought – and perhaps that’s what they do here. I asked for the same (for Annette – I prefer mine saturated in vinegar!), only for the bloke at the till to grumble, ask the man behind the fryer, and then begrudgingly agree to my request.
The man behind the fryer, clearly for my benefit, said “that has to be the last time today – that’s two in a row, we can’t keep giving it away – these people need to realise it costs us money”. Had he said to me that slices of lemon came at 10p each I’d have been perfectly happy, but instead I came away feeling like I’d done something wrong. While waiting for our haddock to be fried, I saw this sign by the counter – ordinarily you’d imagine that it was written with a smile, but I’m sure that it just as miserable as the two men behind the counter…

This has to be one of the best placed registration plates! Unusual to see humour on an industrial vehicle, but good luck to them!

Cowards too embarassed to hand their rubbish to charity shops in person often dump it on the street outside the shop in the middle of the night. I’ve never understood why: if you know your stuff is rubbish, put it in the bin and don’t trouble yourself taking it to a shop to dump it. If you know your stuff is worth having, take it to the shop when it’s open so that it doesn’t get stolen overnight, kicked over the pavement, or soaked by the rain.
The RSPCA shop in Ruislip Manor had a juvenile bear accompanied only by its mother abandoned at their door the other morning: fortunately the bears both seemed to be comfortable in urban surroundings and so far as I know they didn’t attack anyone, but I hope that the staff were able to rehome them…

I was in South Kensington this morning and as I was walking along the street I heard a car alarm going off. It was a poor Maserati that had been picked up and towed away by a Kensington & Chelsea tow truck.
Naughty Mr Maserati, and congratulations K&C… £200 to release the car and £40 per day storage!
